“Lord, Make My Love Increase And Overflow…!”
Jesus Christ the perfect example of love says, “…If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing”(Jn. 15:5). This is to say all human effort to achieve anything in this world would come to nought if Christ is not at the centre.
The psalmist say if the Lord does not build the house, the builders labour in vain. If the Lord is not the watchman, the sentinels stand guard in vain (127:1).
Try as we can to love we are always surrounded by evil and hatred. When a people claim to be “one and indivisible;” yet slaughtering their kindred like cattle, one begins to wonder whether to be inseparable is for love or for hatred!
Paul says of faith, hope and love, love is the greatest (I Cor.13:13). Yet we may not achieve this without Christ. McKee saw it well when she sang that, “…my life without Christ is shattered dreams…”
Even in love, we cannot love enough without the Lord! So Paul prays for the Thessalonians – and that goes for us too, “May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you. May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones”(I Th. 3:11-13).
So to say, the possibility to love to overflowing, the possibility of our hearts being strengthened so that we would be blameless and holy in the presence of God is humanly unattainable without the Lord. “…All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above…”
How often do you pray for the strengthening of others? Your wellbeing depends on the wellbeing of others, pray for them like Paul did! Don’t exclude others from your prayers because you hate them! Jesus paid the price of love when he gave himself up to death! Let love lead and give no room for hatred in your heart.
Prayer: Lord strengthen me in the innerman so that my love for others may grow and overflow exceedingly! Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
