“May God’s Word Be A Lamp To Your Feet…!”
Jesus’ responses to Satan’s three temptations are from Deuteronomy.
1. “It is written, ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God'”(Mt. 4:4 from Dt.8:3).
2. “It is also written, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test'”(Mt. 4:7 from Dt. 6:16).
3. And lastly, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only'”(Mt. 4:10 from Dt. 6:13).
Asked about the greatest commandment of the law, Jesus replied, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'(Mt. 37 from Dt. 6:5). This the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.'(Lev. 19:18). All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
We bring these out to emphasis the power in the word of God.
Our text on which we are reflecting today includes one of those words which Jesus used to silence Satan. After forty years of wandering and before they entered the promised land, Moses reiterated, “Remember how the Lord your God led you all the way in the desert…to humble you and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands. He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna…to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord”(Dt. 8:2-3).
Yes, God tests you with want and lack, just to know what is in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands! Yet when you are sustained by his word, you will overcome all of life’s difficulties, humiliations, trials and temptations!
Always remember this: your sustenance does not depend on wealth or possessions, power and strength; your life and salvation depends “on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord!”
My friend, when the Lord has looked kindly on you, made his face shine upon you and be gracious to you, “Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God…”Dt. 8:11).
Prayer: Lord, hide your word in my heart so that I may not forget you. Amen!
Welcome back to a new week of work! Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
