“Love Without Limit!”
Each time I procure a loan from a financial house, I try as much as possible to pay back earlier than the agreed time frame. Being a debtor whether to an individual or to a financial house can make one to be quite uncomfortable. Our good book gives this piece of advice, “Let no debt remain outstanding…” It is not good to be a long standing debtor.
However, the advice continues by stating that the only debt that should remain outstanding is “…the continuing debt to love one another, for he who loves his fellow man has fulfilled the law.”
“To love is the one debt that is never paid off. No matter how much people have loved, they are under obligation to keep on loving one another.” This love is not only about loving fellow Christians; it is all-inclusive. It is about loving our neighbors whom Jesus clearly explains to us in the story of the good Samaritan (Lk.10:25-36).
The Mosaic law lays down our moral and social responsibilities, such as “Do not commit adultery.” “Do not murder, “Do not steal,” etc. These commandments “are summed up in this one rule, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is a fulfilment of the law”(Rom.13:8-10).
My friend the text today summarises all our reflections for the week. It reminds us that the horizontal relationships we live with other people should be a function of the vertical relationship that we enjoy with God.
God loves us unconditionally and continually. His love does not discriminate between Christians and nonchristians. That is why his rain or sunshine, day and night comes to all of humanity and not only to Christians. Therefore, what we enjoy from God, let others, through us see God in action as we fulfil the law through the continuing debt of loving one another. Let us not hurt others through our words and deeds.
Weekend prayer: Holy Spirit help me to demonstrate the love of God through word and deed. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
