“Awesome God: We Give You Praise!”(Ps.104:1-13).
It’s a new day and a new week. Thank you LORD for love.
An out of the Bible story about Abraham says Abraham’s father was a polytheist. He had a room full of idols – gods of this or that. They wete made of clay. One day young Abraham made a solid cane, entered the god room and destroyed all the gods. When his father saw what Abraham had done, he was full of rage. When he asked Abraham why he had done such an abominable act, Abraham replied, “I reasoned that if the gods are as powerful as you think they are, they would save themselves.”
Some years back I was doing some research on religious co-existence in Bali Nyonga (See Titanji, Vincent P.K (ed), 2016). While conducting interviews, one Pentecostal pastor raised the issue of the one time destruction of some Voma objects that led to some unhealthy skirmishes which almost took away lives.
The pastor’s opinion was that people do not have to fight for their god. A god should fight for itself and the worshippers.
Yes, it is foolhardy and senseless that you can use your hands to carve something out of wood or stone and then claim that that piece of carving is a divinity offering you protection.
There is only One God. The psalmist sings, “O LORD my god, you are very great; you are clothed with splendour and majesty…” Our God is the one who has created the things that others take and make their gods.
The clouds are his chariots, the winds his messengers and flames of fire are his servants. “He waters the mountains from his upper chambers; the earth is sstisfied by the fruit of his work.”
There is only One God who has provided for us all that we need. You see, a little girl was asked to repeat psalm 23. She gave this wonderful summary of the psalm. “The LORD is my shepherd. He gives me everything I need.” He is awesome and he is the great provider without whom we are nothing. Let his praise continually be on our lips for there is none comparable to him. Because of his love for us, he has redeemed us through his Son’s blood on the cross. And we have the Holy Spirit as our sanctifier whose manifold gifts provides us unlimited access to all that is good for us.
