“True Education!”(I Jn.2:24-29).
In the desert the children of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron because they were starving. They longed for the fleshpots of Egypt, albeit in servitude. God provided them with manna which they ate for forty years (Ex.16:2ff).
After feeding a crowd of 5000 people “with five small barley loaves and two small fish”, Jesus left them unnoticed. They looked for him and when they found him they wanted to know how he got there.
Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs, but because you are the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you…”*
The question the people asked him after he said this should be our question too. And the answer Jesus gave them is for us too:
“‘What must we do to do the work God requires?’ Jesus answered, ‘The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent'”(Jn.6:22-29).
In today’s text John gives us this piece of advice: “See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father…”
This is important because there are always “trying to lead you astray.” We do not need new teachers to teach us anything new as long as the anointing we received remains in us. This anointing is real, it is not counterfeit, and it teaches us about all things. What it has taught us is, “remain in him”(Christ).
It is attributed to Albert Einstein that “Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school.” I suppose this is not to say what was learned in school is not important; rather it is that, that which remains is what is of essence.
Let what we heard from the beginning be our education according to Albert Einstein.
Let us “continue in him, so that when he appears, we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming.”
(In place of prayer today give us your prayer request).
Have a blessed Sunday! Peace be with you!
