“Saved By Faith Alone, But Not A Faith That Stands Alone II!”(Jm.2:18-26).
“But someone will say, ‘You have faith, I have deeds.’ Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do…” As it was then, just like now, some consider that faith and works are separate gifts. As such some are gifted with faith and others are gifted with works. It doesn’t work that way!
We cannot emphasize that we are saved by faith and not by works. But works should be a complement to faith.
Imagine that Jesus told his Father, “Father, I have accepted to go and die for this people.” But then what if he did not follow his words by his action of coming and accepting to die?
Paul who insists that we are saved by faith alone apart from works, still points out how works complement faith when he says, “The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love”(Gal. 5:6). This is to say “faith is not mere intellectual assent but a living trust in God’s grace that expresses itself in acts of love.”(Cf.I Th. 1:3).
Dear friend, in this pilgrim’s progress let your deeds of love be the testimony of your faith.
Weekend prayer: Holy Spirit help me daily to complement my faith with works of love. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
Rev Babila Fochang.
