“No Other God But Yahweh!”(Dan.6:1-10).
When Darius took over the kingdom of Babylon, he appointed 120 satraps(governors) “to rule throughout the kingdom, with three administrators over them, “one of whom was Daniel” – a Jewish exile.
“Daniel so distinguished himself among the administrators and the satraps by his exceptional qualities that the king planned to set him over the whole kingdom.”
This is where jealousy and hatred set in. The rest banded together to see how they could discredit Daniel. They didn’t find anything to accuse him against. They agreed that the only way to get at him was to induce him against the worship of his God.
They went and lied to the king that they had all agreed to tell the king “to issue an edict and enforce the decree that anyone who prays to any god or man during the next thirty days, except to you, O king, shall be thrown in the lion’s den…king Darius put the decree in writing.”
“Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day, he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.”
If you put your trust in God, depending solely on his grace, you will excel in whatever you are engaged with. The flipside is that excelling in what you do is the easiest way of arousing the jealousy and hatred of your compatriots!
How true it is that even if you are walking inside water, your enemies on the land will still accuse you of raising the dust that is entering their eyes.
Imagine 122 respectable officers banding together against a single individual! But “one with God is majority!”
A main lesson of this text is that let no amount of pressure, intimidation, or threat to life cause you to renege on your worship of the LORD your God.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, strengthen us in the innerman to be steadfast in our devotion to the God of our salvation. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
