“Waiting For Enemies To Be Made Footstool!”(Heb.10:11-18).
“Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool. For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy. The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First he says: ‘This is the covenant I will make with them after that time,’ says the Lord. ‘I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.’ Then he adds: ‘Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.’ And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.”
All things being equal, we are under the new covenant in which the LORD has put his laws in our hearts and written them on our minds. As such he no longer remembers our sins and lawless acts.
This is possible through the once for all sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ who is now enthroned in heaven at the right hand of God.
Unfortunately, the devil is still around, roaming like a roaring lion and luring us away from the LORD. Sometimes we are able like the Lord Jesus Christ to tell him, “Get behind me Satan!” But sometimes we are vulnerable and gets entrapped by his persuasive and enticing allurements. It is at such moments that Christ the Savior intercedes for us.
Satan will continue to ensnare us, sometimes we will overcome him, and sometimes he will gain over us, but through forgiveness, the LORD will not remember those sins.
We may wonder why this is so? This is so because the victory of Christ is not fully complete. Victory is incomplete because “since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool.”
Secondly, we are not fully holy. “For by one sacrifice, he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.” “Being made” suggests a process. That is why full conversion is a process because there are many areas of our lives that must be turned to the LORD before we are fully turned to him.
Although sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary because we have been forgiven, sin persists.
It is in this sense that John writes, “My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One”(I Jn.2:1).
Weekend prayer: Holy Spirit, empower us to resist the wiles of the devil, but where we fail, dear Lord Jesus Christ be our advocate. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
