“Let Mercy Stand Above Law!”
The saying remains true: “When you point a finger at someone, three of the fingers point back at you!”
Jesus was in the temple when “the teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery.” They knew the Law of Moses commanded for such a woman to be stoned to death. We see a kind of “selective justice” here. And that is what we are practicing in the church today. The woman did not commit adultery alone; so where was the man?
Jesus however opens our eyes with an indirect indictment that raises the moral question, “Who are you who wants to condemn another person?” You want to use your power and authority because you are teachers of the Law and Pharisees to condemn other people, but are you free of sin?
Jesus told them as he is telling us who are so judgmental and vindictive: “If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” They were weakened and they left “one at a time, the older ones first.” These people were at least honest to themselves, unlike the hypocrites we are today who would still go ahead to cast the first stone!
It is not as if forgiveness is a license for sin. Jesus told the woman, “Go now and leave your life of sin”(Jn.8:1-11). Yes, Paul says we cannot continue to sin because grace abounds! God does not condone sin, but he is ready to embrace the repentant sinner!
Paul told the Corinthians to forgive and comfort the wayward person so that he is not overwhelmed with excessive sorrow. When we fail to forgive, Satan outwits us for that is his schemes(II Cor. 2:5-11). Forgiveness shouldn’t be mere rhethorics! Forgiveness that is genuine brings healing! There is no future for any group of people without forgiveness! When we call for forgiveness we should also stop scheming against others! We are where we are since October 2016 not because we have not been praying. We are here because we pray for one thing and are doing the other! When we mean what we say, and do what we mean, God will forgive us. He will bring order in our church and he will heal our land!
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ thank you for acquitting a sinner like me. Holy Spirit convict me to be genuine in forgiving others even as the Lord has forgiven me. Amen!
Have a blessed Sunday! Peace be with you!
