“Spiritual Wealth Is Better Then Earthly Riches!”
When an overloaded boat risk sinking, the crewmen are forced to cast heavy loads overboard so as to lighten the vessel and save the lives of the passengers.
When wealth increases, even the pious may tend to ignore the source of that same blessing. Insatiable man is often so engrossed in multiplying wealth that he can do so even in God’s name! Today Jesus is telling us that wealth is an overload, which unless thrown overboard may sink the owner.
A man came to Jesus and wanted to know “what good thing” he must do to get eternal life. Jesus told him to keep the commandments. He said he had already done that. Jesus told him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” Upon hearing this the guy went away sad, “because he had great wealth.” This is a tall order!
It is not also like Jesus challenges wealth. In his group he had a treasurer because they received financial support from wealthy followers. Jesus implies that wealth honestly acquired is a blessing from God. However, this blessing can become an over load if not shedded by sharing with others. This is exactly how the early believers shared their wealth. “From each according to his means and to each according to his needs.” Cf Acts: 4:32-35.
For Jesus wealth is useful when it puts a smile on the majority, it is not that some keep hoarding while others are languishing in abject poverty and misery! Those who do not put so much interest in wealth because they follow Jesus will receive it hundred times over in ways only God knows how. Above all, they “will inherit eternal life”(Mtt.19:16-22&27-30).
My friend, if you have received from God do not allow that same gift to become the reason for your alienation from God’s presence! Learn to share, then share and share!
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ help me not to hold tight to the gifts I’ve received from you; let me share with others. Amen!
Have a blessed Sunday! Peace be with you!
