“Lord, Have Your Way With Me!”
Despite the fact that king David had troops and special guard on his left and right, Shimei, a nonentity meets the king and starts cursing him and pelting him and his officials with stones. While pelting the king he said, “Get out, get out, you murderer, you scoundrel! The Lord has repaid you for all the blood you shed in the household of Saul…The Lord has given the kingdom into the hands of your son Absalom. You have come to ruin because you are a murderer!”
Typical of overzealous henchmen, Abishai said to the king, “Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Let me go over and cut off his head.”
But king David said, “What does that have to do with you…? If he is cursing because the Lord said to him, ‘Curse David,’ who can ask, ‘Why do you do this?’… My son, my own flesh and blood, is trying to kill me. How much more, then this Benjamite! Leave him alone; let him curse, for the Lord has told him to. It may be that the Lord will look upon my misery and restore to me the covenant blessing instead of his curse today…”(II Sam. 16:5-14).
Shimei was seething with deserved anger as a relative of Saul. David may have been a powerful king, but he was a murderer! He killed Uriah to take his wife. No matter how renowned and pronounced we are, we have our dark sides which displeases God.
There are always overzealous henchmen in the likes of Abishai who would want to cut off the head of any dead dog that dares to challenge or insult us.
That notwithstanding, the heart of the story is that mighty king David recognised the hand of God in the action of Shimei. When we are humbled to bear all the insults because we see the hand of God in it, we become humble and call to mind our sins. In such humility, the Lord looks upon our misery and restores his covenant blessing on us.
Prayer: Lord humble me to bear the insults of my enemies because you are using it to restore my covenant blessing. Amen!
