“Jesus Christ Is All You Need!”
While in prison John the Baptist heard what Jesus was doing. He sent his disciples to ask Jesus, “Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?” It doesn’t seem like John didn’t know Jesus. He was the one who baptized Jesus. When Jesus came to him to be baptized he even argued that Jesus would have been the one to baptize him. At that time Jesus answered him, “Let it be so for now; it is proper for us to fulfil all righteousness”(Mtt.313-15).
Why then did John still send to find out if Jesus was the Christ he had preached about? Possibly because Jesus began his ministry only when he “heard that John had been put in prison…”(Mtt.4:12-17).
A message to tyrant rulers is that imprisonment cannot hold back the word of God. Herod achieved nothing by putting John in prison. Jesus continued where John left. Even in prison John still had disciples whom he could still use.
The ones he sent to Jesus met Jesus when he had just finished instructing his own twelve disciples to send them out on mission. While they went, Jesus did not remain idle. He went teaching and preaching in the towns of Galilee. So what did Herod achieve by incarcerating John the Baptist? Nothing!
Jesus did not give a direct “yes” or “no” answer to John’s disciples. Rather he told them to use their ears and eyes. “Go back and report to John what you hear and see. The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor…”(Mtt.11:1-6).
In other words, the oppressed and suppressed marginalised and disenfranchised people now have access to the fountain of hope and life – the word of God!
My friend, in whatever task you do, let your work bear witness that you are serving the Lord. More so, as you move through life you have to “shine your eyes!” Be watchful and observant and also have a listening ear! By this you would be able to quickly discern the works of God in your life community!
Herod locked John up to hide a truth, yet he was distressed when he had to behead John (Mtt,14:9). Truth shall prevail and justice must take its course!
Prayer: Lord enable us to use our ears and eyes to recognize your works in our lives and country. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
