“May The Joy Of The Brethren Overflow Through Your Choice!”
Our existence on this earth depends on making choices. Each choice has a consequence, and the consequences leads to further choices. However, there are certain choices which cannot be determined by us because there is somebody who holds our future in his hands.
To live or to die does not depend so much on the choice we make; even when some commit suicides and murders.
When Paul was in a crisis moment due to his imprisonment he considered that “to live is Christ and to die is gain.” What he wanted was for Christ to be exalted in his body “whether by life or by death.”
Torn between pain and the uncertainty of freedom, he was indecisive whether to choose to live or to die: “If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labour for me. Yet what shall I choose? I don’t know! I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; but it is necessary for you that I remain in the body…”
It is not as if it really was in his power, but for the sake of the others he became convinced that he will remain in the body.
The choice to be or not to be, to do or not to do, to remain or depart must be motivated by the love for the people! For their sake he concluded, “…I will remain, and will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith, so that through my being with you again your joy in Christ Jesus will overflow on account of me”(Phi.1:22-26).
My friend, when faced with a choice, let your choice be motivated by the desire to ensure the progress and joy of those who are struggling to know Christ more and more.
