“Be A Servant Like Jesus!”
When Jesus finished washing the feet of the disciples, he gave them a lecture on the significance of that symbolic action.
“Do you understand what I have done for you? You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord’, and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you…Now that you know these things, you are blessed if you do them”(Jn. 13:1-17).
Jesus did not say this meaning that every Maundy Thursday we should make a public demonstration of washing the feet of those under us. Such is mere drama!
Jesus is telling us that leadership is service to those under us and beside us. A shepherd has the unbounded duty of taking care of the flock, ensuring that the sheep find green pasture and he leads them to refreshing waters when they are thirsty. The shepherd shows concern for the missing sheep, abandoning the many to go search for the lone strayed sheep!
Jesus set the example of leadership as servanthood and not lordship! The house helps, the family under you, the people under you at your workplace, the destitute on the streets, your subordinates and the commoners all around you deserve services from you! Attend to them from the standpoint of service and not expect them to make you god!
My friend, now that “you know these things, you are blessed if you do them!”
Prayer: Humble me Lord so that I should be ready to serve and not to be served. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
