“Do Not Be In Error For Lack Of Knowledge!”(Mk.12:18-27).
It’s another day and the beginning of another week. We thank God for finding us worthy to still be in the land of the living.
Death and the hereafter is the preoccupation of all religions. To some death is annihilation. To others there is reincarnation, and to others the dead are the living-dead for a period of time before metamorphosing into spirit beings.
During the time of Jesus Judaism haboured the Pharisees who believed in the resurrection and the Sadduccees who did not. But both were worshipping one God at the same place of worship.
The Sadduccees who say there is no resurrection raised issues with Jesus about Levirate marriage in the resurrection life, Jesus asked them, “Are you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God?” They were in error because they did not know the Scriptures. Levirate marriage was intended to defend and protect the interest of a widow at the death of her husband and to maintain the honour of the husband’s family name(see Dt.25:5-10).
Life in the resurrection is not about marriage or consanguinity. In the resurrection life we may not even know our kinsmen. There’ll be neither race nor colour because we will have angelic bodies.
Besides, God is not the God of the dead, but of the living. When God appeared to Moses in the burning bush, he told Moses,“I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.”
A common phrase is used to narrate the dead of the patriarchs. When Abraham died, “he was gathered to his people”(Gen 25:7). At death Isaac “was gathered to his people”(Gen.35:29), and when Jacob died, he too “was gathered to his people”(Gen.49:33). “He was gathered to his people” is another way of saying “he joined his ancestors.”
These people are the living-dead awaiting the rapture when the dead will arise and meet with the Lord Jesus Christ at his second coming.
We should worry ourselves about whether we shall be counted in the number, not about whether marriage and other entanglements would continue in heaven. Do not underestimate the power of God who brings even dry bones back to life!
What is needful now is to prepare for the Lord Jesus Christ who says, “Behold I am coming soon!”(Rev.22:12).
Prayer of the week: Lord Jesus Christ lead us out of error and ignorance and lead us to the resurrection truth. Amen!
Welcome back to a new working day week! Have a blessed day and week! Peace be with you!
