“Don’t Be Afraid When You Share With The Poor!”
While we stress on quantity, God is always interested in quality. Isaiah wrote about a young shoot that will arise from the stump of Jessie. God reminds us constantly of the remnants who shall return and be reinstated.
Today Jesus says, “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.”
There is a lot going on which gives us reasons to live in uncertainty and fear about the future, but Jesus is assuring you and I, “Do not be afraid…”
He also proposes a tough one which many of us would not want to obey. “Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhsusted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”(Lk.12:32-34).
Jesus is not advocating that the wealthy should suddenly live in penury for the sake of satisfying the poor. Monasteries were started by people who denounced earthly possessions. The rich people became interested in their services and started willing their estates to them. Suddenly the monastries became so rich and powerful and became the great centres of learning.
Jesus does not want us to live in excess while some are languishing around us. This is very much true in our context at a time like this when many have been displaced and barely scratch for survival!
My friend, as soon as you read this meditation, get up, go through your wardrobe, pick out some dresses and other stuffs and call some disadvantaged persons around you and share with them!
Don’t just say, “Amen, man of God!”
This is an instruction from the Lord Jesus Christ which should be obeyed! “Sell your possessions and give to the poor!” Don’t be afraid that sharing your possessions with the poor will make you poor. Far from it, by doing so you are merely putting your treasure in heaven. There in heaven your treasure can’t be exhausted, neither can it be stolen nor destroyed by moth! Jesus Christ is the only everlasting treasure!
Prayer: Thank you Lord for giving me the kingdom. Let me prepare to enter it by sharing my possessions with the poor. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
