“Eschew The Entitlement Mentality!”(Lk.17:7-10).
“Entitlement is “the belief that one is inherently deserving of privileges or special treatment.”
This is what someone said of entitlement: “The entitlement mentality is defined as a sense of deservingness or being owed a favor when little or nothing has been done to deserve special treatment. It’s the ‘you owe me’ attitude. Entitlement is a narcissistic personality trait. It’s not known exactly how this mentality develops.”
Entitlement has a positive meaning as well, but we are focused here on the undeserved “you owe me attitude.”
Entitlement has suddenly become a household word. It seems that a lot of things are going wrong in our society because of the entitlement mentality.
Sadly enough is that the clergies are more and more developing the entitlement mentality as a norm that should not be questioned. This claim is based on a clergy-centred interpretation of “The laborer deserves his wages”
Some marriages have hit the rocks because of the entitlement mentality. Some families have disintegrated because of the entitlement mentality. Some once cordial relationships and friendships have torn apart as a result of entitlement mentality.
The philosophy of “a goat eats grass where it is tethered” is a false claim to entitlement, which greatly contributes to the “new normal” of bribery and corruption.
Even when as Christians we obey God’s commandments, eschew sin and keep the faith, we shouldn’t claim entitlement. When we do the work for which we are paid, we shouldn’t claim entitlement.
Our Lord and Master Jesus Christ teaches us, saying: “…when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, ‘We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.'”
Therefore, my friend, just do what you have to do without any claim of entitlement.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, help me daily to perform my duty without a claim of entitlement. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
