“God Has Overlooked Your Ignorance; But Now Amend Your Ways!”
Prof. John S. Mbiti, the renowned African theologian argues that the missionaries did not bring God to Africa. On the contrary it was God who brought them to Africa.
Besides, Africa was not a blank slate on which everything written on it was new. God was already in Africa, the missionaries only helped them to name Christ who was hitherto unknown.
On this issue Africa is not an exception. It was the same in Athens. In Athens Paul recognised this and it was his conviction that true and thorough evangelism must begin with the known to the unknown.
He told the people in the Areopagus, “Men of Athens! I see that in every way you are very religious. For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an alter with this inscription: To An Unknown God. Now what you worship as something unknown I am going to proclaim to you…” So saying, Paul started telling them about the God who created the whole world. He once more contextualized the message by reminding them, “…some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.'”
Paul’s message was not to glorify the idolatry of the Athenians and leave them in their sin. He firmly stated, “In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the one he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead.”(Acts 17:22-34).
That man is the Lord Jesus Christ through whom all mankind shall be saved. No one goes to the Father except through him! (Ni Divine Nchamukong if you are reading me this is my contribution to your request of yesterday). Jesus Christ Is The way, the truth and the life! I said it yesterday and I’m saying it today and it shall be my song till I die! No other name, no other power, and no other means! Jesus Christ is the only gospel the world must cling to!
