“Jesus Christ Is The Only Way…!”
The wise say, “you shouldn’t wait for somebody standing on the same spot.” Paul was in Athens waiting for Silas and Timothy to join him. While waiting, “his spirit was provoked within him as he saw that the city was full of idols.” He was thus challenged by this idolatry, so he started reasoning with the Jews in the synagogues and devout persons. Even in the market places where idle loafers spent their time, he was there with them everyday talking about Jesus Christ.
The Epicurean and Stoic philosophers called him “babbler”, while others said, “He seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities – because he was preaching about Jesus and the resurrection.” He was then taken to the Areopagus where they wanted him to tell them more about the new teaching and what it means. Of course, they spent “their time in nothing except telling or hearing something new”(Acts17:16-21).
Daniel J. Siegel who advances the concept of mindsight says it “is the ability to perceive our own minds and the minds of others…This ability allows us to focus on the thoughts, feelings, perceptions, sensations, memories, beliefs, and intentions of others as well as of ourselves.” With these basic elements of the mind “We can perceive and use to understand” others and ourselves.
Everyday we are confronted with new environments or new concepts that are idolatrous! In such situations our spirits (mindsights) should become provoked within us and challenge us to talk out boldly about the idolatry that entangles us.
We should be the solution and not become part of the problem. Paul did not admire and join the idolatry and wasteless philosophies of the Epicureans and Stoics by thinking that they had a better way than the one he possessed! Imagine us going to “Babalawo,” and “Sangomas” to receive charms and rings, which we think are higher and stronger than the resurrected Jesus Christ, the Lord and Saviour of the world!
The power of the cross surpasses all other powers, because at the mention of the name of Jesus every knee must bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord!
Prayer: Lord provoke my spirit within me so I can speak fearlessly against the idolatry that holds your children hostage. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
