“Keep Doing Good And Saving Lives!”
When a law works against the welfare of humanity, then there is something terribly wrong with it. When God asked that the Sabbath should be set aside as a day of rest, it was meant to liberate rather than enslave. Nobody was to work on that day, including the beasts of burden.
This law wasn’t actually intended for the rich landowners for themselves were not the ones who did the labours(cf.Ex.20:8-11).
During the time of Jesus the sect of Pharisees was the dominant group in Judaism. Majority of the teachers of the law came from this group. They exaggerated the interpretation of the law. They based so much on the legality of the sabbath day at the expense of the mercy which was intended by that law.
On one Sabbath day Jesus saw a man with a shrivelled arm in the synagogue. “Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath.” Jesus told the man, “Stand up in front of everyone.” Then he asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?”
They couldn’t answer because for them there was no emergency why the man should be healed on the Sabbath! Jesus looked “at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts…” So he healed the man!
Interestingly “the Pharisees went out and began to plot with the Herodians how they might kill Jesus”(Mk.3:1-6). The Herodians were those who belonged to Herod’s family and his sympathezers. The Pharisees hated them because they represented foreign domination! However the Pharisees joined them to plot how ro kill Jesus.
Imagine a plot being hatched to kill a man for doing good! The story is still the same in our generation! Destroy the caterpillars so that the garden fruits may become healthy!
Divisions, quarells and bickerings are never so much about the faith. People pass judgment on others about food and drink and festivals. Paul says those things are transupient and have nothing to do with the faith. “The reality…is found in Christ…!(Col.3:16-19).
My friend, never tire of doing good and let the light of Christ continue to shed its radiance through you even when you are mocked and derided!
Sunday prayer: Lord teach me to live by the spirit of the law which is life-saving and not to make friends with enemies against good deeds. Amen!
Have a blessed Sunday! Peace be with you!
