“Lord, My Only Hope Is You!”
Jesus had just offered some hard teachings and “many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.” He turned and asked the twelve, “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Simon Peter in his usual extrovert manner replied, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God”(Jn. 6:66-69).
Last evening I was carrying my granddaughter on my lap while reading this text aloud. When I read, “You do not want to leave too, do you?” She answered in a loud voice, “Nooo!”
I felt a certain kind of indescribable inner relief at her words. I knew at that moment that truly God is a merciful God. When she said, “Nooo,” I knew there was someone, innocent as she is who will stand by me, no matter what!
You know that gut feeling when you have a sense of abandonment. That moment when people around you no longer follow you because you no longer serve their interests. I could imagine what was passing through Jesus’ mind when many of his disciples no longer followed him. It was the same feeling which caused him to ask the twelve whether they too wanted to leave?
It would have been the worst moment for him if the twelve had decided to leave as well! Oh, how comforting the words of Simon Peter! “Lord, to whom shall we go?…”
Peter’s words reassured him, not just because they were bent on going with him to the end, but more because of their conviction that he possessed the words of eternal life. Moreso, they believed and knew he was the Holy One of God!
Peter’s words bring to mind the song, “I have decided to follow Jesus…No turning back, no turning back…”
Life is Christ is not smooth sailing at all! Even so, remain in the Lord and he will remain with you until you overcome!
Prayer: Lord Jesus I will remain with you. I believe and know that you are the Holy One of God, and you alone have the words of eternal life. Amen!
We wish you a happy and blessed Sunday! Peace be with you!
