“Lord Take Not Your Holy Spirit From Me…!”
Our story today relates to what brought little David the shepherd boy to the palace and service of king Saul. The Spirit of God left Saul and he was tormented by an evil spirit. Realising this his servants asked for permission to seek for a musician who could sing for the king whenever he got into such tantrums.
David was identified and brought to the palace so he could always sing to drive away the evil spirit when it came on the king(I Sam. 16:14-23).
Experience they say is the best teacher. David learned some vital lessons from Sauls life which served as mirror for his own life.
He realised that the same God who gives you his Spirit can take it the moment you no longer align with him. He also confirmed in practical terms that singing in praise of God can drive away evil from us.
The confirmation of this is the many psalms we sing or recite today which were composed by David. As a shepherd boy he had all the time to learn to play the harp, compose and sing good songs. Once a shepherd leads the flock to green pastures, he can have all the time to relax.
In his own time as king of Israel, David never forgot what happened to Saul when God took his Spirit away from Saul.
When David did what he knew angered God he was quick to sing out to the Lord, “Have Mercy on me O God, according to your unfailing love…Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me…”(Ps. 51).
My friend, God the Father through Jesus Christ has sent his Holy Spirit to lead us into all truths and to show us the paths of justice, righteousness, truth and peace. Walk in it; but as a weak humanbeing, whenever you go the wrong direction go to God in song and prayer!
Prayer: Have Mercy on me O God, according to your unfailing love. Do not take your Holy Spirit from me. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
