“Miracles As Signs Representing Significance!”(Jn.20:30-31).
In this post-ressurection pericope, John writes: :Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”
Have you ever asked or been asked this question:“Where is it found in Bible?” This well-intentioned question alludes that if it is not mentioned in the Bible it cannot be beneficial to faith-seekers.
John seems to contradict this when he concludes his gospel stating: “Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written”(Jn.21:25).
Agreed that what is written gives us enough that should make us believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God and that by believing we may have life in his name. But it does not rule out that other sources are immaterial.
We may be quick to cite Revelations on the warning not to add or take words away “from this book of prophecy”(22:18-19). It wouldn’t be heresy if we say this warning relates specifically to the book of Revelation.
Israel of old was commanded: “Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the LORD your God that I give you”(Dt.4:2).
It may be true that the citation in Deuteronomy is specific to the Pentateuch and that of Revelation specific to the book of Revelation. However, what we should take home as a rule of faith is that what is presented is enough and must be obeyed and believed. “Anything that adulterates or contradicts it cannot be tolerated.”
Bottom line: Whatever evidence that has not been documented in the Book of life, if used will still not convince any doubting Thomas. What is presented is enough to cause you and I to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God and that by believing we may have life in his name.
John intentionally talks about miracles as “miraculous signs;” this is so because the miracles are just pointers to disciples to believe in who Jesus is, and by believing to have life in his name. Signs represent significance in the same way that a signpost only directs the way.
May any miracle that happens to you today be a miraculous sign pointing you to Jesus the Christ.
Weekend prayer: Dear Lord Jesus Christ continue to expand our faith through miraculous signs. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
