“Protect The LORD’S Anointed!”(I Sam.26:13-25)[19/11/24).
David made sure he told Saul how vulnerable Saul had been. He would have killed Saul without anybody noticing. David derided Abner, who, as commander of Saul’s army, was not man enough to protect his king.
David also derided Saul, the king of Israel, for wasting so much resources and energy in coming out “to look for a flea – as one hunts a partridge in the mountains.”
David handed back the King’s spear with these words that should resound to us over and over: “The LORD rewards every man for his righteousness and faithfulness. The LORD delivered you into my hands today, but I would not lay a hand on the LORD’S anointed. As surely as I valued your life today, so may the LORD value my life and deliver me from all trouble.”
David noted that either it is God who had set Saul against him, or it was men who had set the king against him. If it was God, then he was ready to admit his wrongs and make appeasement with an offering. But if it was men who had set the king against him, they should be cursed before the LORD.
Any leader holds the sole right to handpick his henchmen because such persons are responsible for the direction of his leadership. A leader should not surround himself with people who can easily lead him towards cruelty through wrong advice. Such persons should be cursed!
However, the leader is responsible for his actions, and his drive towards wickedness can be an internalised evil that his good counsellors can do nothing to correct. Saul was such a leader who wasted the nation’s resources to chase David – a flea! But then, “nothing lasts forever!”
I like the hypocritical but prophetic blessings of Saul to David: “May you be blessed, my son David; you will do great things and surely triumph.”
And Saul’s hypocritical yet prophetic blessing came to pass! David became the tree from whose stump a young shoot sprouted up to change the direction of world history.
Talking about transition and change, my church, the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon, has a Moderator-elect who assumes full responsibility in January 2025. Sir, Rev Miki Hans, Rt. Rev, soon to become, congratulations. As you prepare to assume this great assignment, know that “uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.” When the LORD chooses, he anoints and equips. Be a father to your people and bring them under your wings as a hen. I’m sure that David was a better king than David because he learned by rote to do some things differently from Saul. David was there as a kid to sing for Saul when he was possessed by an evil spirit. But David, as a king, was there to compose hymns to sing the glory of God; thus deepening the spirituality of all God’s people.
By the grace of God, as one of your lecturers in the Seminary, I passed on some lectures to you on the dynamics of African Christianity. Later on, we worked as colleagues, you being PS and I being PT of East Mungo South Presbytery.
Our prayer for you: May you and your team redirect this church to her focus of preparing souls for the kingdom of God. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
Rev Babila Fochang.
