“Purify Yourself From Everything That Contaminates…!”(II Cor.6:14-7:1).
“Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?…Come out from them and be separate…”
The above doesn’t imply that we should firmly conclude that belonging to Christ means cutting off all ties with anything that reminds us of our past. It does not also mean that belonging to Christ means we have nothing to do anymore with our family members, relatives and friends who are not yet ready to be with us. If we arrive at such conclusions it would mean the light in us is darkness.
Christ is the seal of the new covenant who has abrogated the old law.
The law said, “Do not plow with an ox and a donkey yoked together”(Dt.22:10). More than that, one was not to mate different kinds of animals, nor plant the field with two different kinds of seed, nor wear clothing woven of two kinds of material(Lev.19:19).
Paul’s concern is that believers should not cooperate with false teachers, who are in reality servants of Satan who parade themselves as angels of God with charming and persuasive ways. Such people are “false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ.” This isn’t strange since “Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness”(II Cor.11:13-15).
The Church of Christ is supposedly the light of Christ to the world and in the world, but when it harbors such servants of Satan masquerading as servants of righteousness, the Church’s light within becomes darkness.
There is therefore the need for self-examination by each member of the body of Christ and collective-examination of the body of Christ so as to distinctly be the light it is supposed to be.
In Paul’s words, “Dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.”
Prayer: Holy Spirit, purify us from everything that contaminates body and spirit. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
