“The Day Of The LORD!”(Am.5:18-20)[10/12/2024].
A girl boasted to some of her classmates that she had been told that the GCE results were out and she had passed in eight papers. She spoke with arrogance that there was surely some error. Otherwise, she would’ve passed in eleven papers. She was already mocking some of her classmates whom (according to her) she knew wouldn’t pass. Behold, she failed, while those she mocked passed with good grades.
After an examination has been written, there are those who wait for the results with confidence because they know they wrote well, following all the instructions. There are others who brag in confidence, but deep down, they know they wrote nonsense. There are those who just brace themselves for any outcome. There are those who don’t care.
My friend, such is the various frames of mind of those who long for the day of the LORD. We do sing, “Soon and very soon, we are going to meet the LORD…”, but how prepared are we for that day?
Israel longed for the day that God would exalt them because they were his people. But Amos, a shepherd and a tender of sycamore trees prophesied to them, warning that even though the day of the LORD will come, it will not be as they expected. Amos said the day of the LORD would be “a day of darkness, not light,” because Israel had not been faithful to the LORD.
Today, we are the “new Israel.” If Amos addresses us today, is he going to prophesy a message of hope or of doom?
Amos, however, has not prophesied doom on us. Amos is calling us to repentance so that the day of the LORD will be a day of joyous celebration for our salvation in Christ Jesus. On that day of restoration, the LORD will plant us “never again to be uprooted…”(9:11-15).
Let us rid our lives of the debris that will hinder us from jubilating on the day of the LORD.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, help us to take the route that prepares us for the day of the LORD. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
