“The High Priest Of The New Covenant!”(Heb.8:1ff).
The content of the letter to the Hebrews is quite contextual as it addresses specifics as to why the Jews should embrace the gospel as a fulfilment of the covenant relationship that they had with Yahweh. We remind ourselves that a covenant is an agreement between two parties whose conditions are binding to both parties.
Christ is presented here as The High Priest of the New Covenant. Unlike the earthly priests who serve at a sanctuary that is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven, Christ serves in the heavenly sanctuary, “the true tabernacle set up by the LORD, not by man.”
Christ serves a superior ministry that is founded on better promises.
This in itself makes the difference: If the old covenant was faultless, there would be no need for a new one. “But God found fault with the people” – who failed to keep the terms of the agreement – “and said: ‘…This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time. I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, “Know the Lord,” because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.’ By calling this covenant ‘new,’ he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and aging will soon dissappear.”
The reason for the new covenant is because “God found fault with the people…” The fault was that the people became comfortable in ritualised practices while ignoring the true practice of loving God with the entirety of your being and loving your neighbour as yourself.
Dear friend, God in Christ has forgiven our wickedness and does not want to remember our sins anymore. The High Priest of the New Covenant is also the Lamb of sacrifice for the atonement of our sins. That is why God says, “I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”
Prayer of the day and week: Gracious LORD, put your law in our minds and write it on our hearts so that we enjoy the superior ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen!
Welcome back to a new working day and week! Have a blessed day and week! Peace be with you!
