“The LORD’S Word Can’t Be Destroyed!”(Jer. 36:27-32).
King Jehoiakim burned the words Jeremiah dictated to Baruch. That action wasn’t enough to stop the word of God from being written again. The content was in the heart of Jeremiah. He dictated the same words to Baruch and added further what the LORD now directed to Jehoiakim: “You burned the scroll and said, ‘Why did you write on it that the king of Babylon would certainly come and destroy this land and cut off both men and animals from it?’
Therefore, this is what the LORD says about Jehoiakim king of Judah: He will have no-one to sit on the throne of David; his body will be thrown out and exposed to the heat by day and the frost by night. I will punish him and his children and his attendants for their wickedness; I will bring on them and those living in Jerusalem and the people of Judah every dissaster I pronounced against them, because they have not listened.”
The failure to listen or to be adamant in regards to what we have heard is the bane of today’s spiritual and moral bankruptcy! That is why we repeat the scriptures that “today if you hear God’s voice harden not your hearts…”
We cannot use position, power and authority to stiffle or destroy the word of God. The Holy Spirit is readily available with a replica of the word of God.
King Jehoiakim behaved like the stupid fly that accompanied a corpse into the grave because there was no-one to advise it.! The Babylonian captivity would not have happened if Jehoiakim and others had listened to Jeremiah. When Babylon threatened Judah, the kings of Judah flirted for alliance with Egypt, but Jeremiah was against it. He told Zedekiah who succeeded Jehoiachin after Jehoiakim: “Pharaoh’s army, which has marched out to support you, will go back to its own land to Egypt. The Babylonians will return and attack this city; they will capture it and burn it down”(Jer. 37:6-10).
Back to Jehoiakim, it is not good to be power drunk and play down, ignore or challenge the word of God. Jehoiakim lost the privilege of his bloodline sitting on the throne of David. His arrogance led to his shameful death and worst the Babylonian captivity which lasted some fifty- eight years. All because the king and the people did not listen to the word of God!
Dear friend, “Today if you hear God’s voice harden not your hearts!”
Weekend prayer: Holy Spirit prompt us daily to listen to the word of God and do what he says we should do. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
