“The Truth That Sets Free!”(Jn.8:31-36).
A young man, with glee, once told his friends that he was now finally free of the condemnation of sin as found in the Bible. When asked how he mastered this, he told them:“I have stopped reading the Bible.”
If it is true that ignorance is no excuse before the law, it will mean that his condemnation before God has not changed simply because he is no longer constrained by the Bible.
The sin that keeps us in perpetual servitude is the claim of knowing what, in fact, we do not know.
A claim to knowledge is not knowledge; it remains a claim until proven otherwise.
We do not want to delve into the principles of philosophical truth but suffice to accept that the Lord Jesus Christ says, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
The truth that sets free is not based on the old beliefs of Abrahamiic ancestry as a guarantee of salvation. The truth that sets us free from the bondage of sin is holding on to the teaching of Christ our Savior.
Let me complement the text with this song of Dora Greenwell:
1.
I am not skilled to understand
What God hath willed, what God hath planned;
I only know at His right hand
Stands One who is my Savior.
2.
I take Him at His word indeed:
“Christ died for sinners”—this I read;
For in my heart I find a need
Of Him to be my Savior!
3.
That He should leave His place on high
And come for sinful man to die,
You count it strange? So once did I
Before I knew my Savior!
4.
And, oh, that He fulfilled may see
The travail of His soul in me,
And with His work contented be,
As I with my dear Savior!
5.
Yes, living, dying, let me bring
My strength, my solace from this spring—
That He who lives to be my King
Once died to be my Savior!
My friend, holding on to the teaching of the Lord Jesus Christ is the key to the truth that sets us free from the bondage of sin.
Weekend prayer: Holy Spirit, help us to hold on to the teaching of Christ and become possessors of the truth that sets us free from sin. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
