“Unworthy But Having Nonpareil Faith!”(Lk.7:1-10).
“When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, ‘I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.’…”
The above is Jesus’ response to the centurion who considered that he wasn’t worthy to receive Jesus in his house, and who also believed that it was enough for Jesus to only say a word from a distance and his sick servant will be healed.
Although the centurion was a foreigner, he was acclaimed by the Jews to be a man who loved the Jews and even built a synagogue for them.
While pleading with Jesus to go and heal the centurion’s servant, the Jews said, “this man deserves to have you do this…” But on his part the centurion told Jesus, “Lord…I do not deserve to have you under my roof. That is why I did not even consider myself worthy…”
At one time, when some Jews grumbled when a repented sinner woman poured expensive perfume on Jesus, he told them that what the woman had done will be remembered for generations to come. He did not use such words for the centurion, but the words of the centurion have been immortalized by most Protestant churches; used during the celebration of the Lord’s Supper: “Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed.”
Like we said the other day, great surprises await us on that day! Jesus was amazed by the centurion’s words and confessed that he had not found such great faith even in Israel.
My friend, the Lord Jesus Christ says, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me”(Rev.3:20).
How do you estimate yourself when you hear the knock, open the door and realize that the Lord is the guest? Do you now see yourself as a deserving host?
He is interested in those who acknowledge that they do not deserve him; but who have the faith to know that just a word from him is enough to save a soul.
Weekend prayer: Lord Jesus Christ I am courageous to declare that I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word that makes me whole. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
